Nynke's gap year working for Mercedes in Lisbon

Have you ever dreamed of packing your bags, moving to a new country, and immersing yourself in a different culture? For me, that dream became a reality when I moved from the Netherlands to Portugal to work as a Market Research Agent for Mercedes and Volkswagen. In this blog, I share my experience in Lisbon, from the decision to move to the application process, and the valuable lessons I've learned along the way!

A gap year abroad

My decision to move abroad started as a plan for my gap year after high school. I was unsure about what I wanted to study and saw this as a perfect opportunity to spend my time meaningfully while improving my language skills. Working abroad seemed like the ideal way to do this. I chose Lisbon for several reasons. Portuguese people are known for speaking English quite well, especially in an international city like Lisbon. This gave me the confidence I needed to thrive. Plus, I was drawn to the pleasant weather, beautiful beaches, and amazing food. 🌞

Overcoming initial doubts

One of the most daunting aspects of working abroad is navigating the job application process, but Yobbers made it incredibly smooth for me. As soon as I applied for the job, I was contacted by a recruiter within a day, and within two weeks, everything for my trip was organized. The process was so efficient and straightforward that it significantly reduced my stress and allowed me to focus on preparing for this new chapter in my life.

“I didn’t expect it was possible to start working abroad so quickly!”

Before leaving, I had my fair share of doubts and uncertainties. I worried about missing my friends and family and whether my English skills would be good enough. Looking back, these worries were unnecessary. With Yobbers' support, I felt well-prepared and ready to embrace my new adventure. It was reassuring to know that I had a support system in place.

Settling into life in Lisbon

The relocation to Lisbon was both exciting and surprisingly smooth. From the moment I arrived, I noticed that most people in Lisbon spoke English, which made settling in much easier. My employer provided shared accommodation, and I quickly became friends with my roommates. It was a bit nerve-wracking at first to share a house with two girls I had never met, but it turned out to be a fantastic experience. It’s pretty easy to meet new people when you live abroad. I met most of my friends through the girls I was living with and also at work. Then these people knew other people again and before I knew it, I had a nice group of friends! 🤝

“Living with others who had also moved from their home countries helped me feel at home more quickly!”

Living in Lisbon has been a dream come true. Outside of work, my favorite activities include going to the beach, shopping, and trying out new restaurants. One of my favorite memories is heading to the beach after work and soaking in the relaxed lifestyle! The simple pleasures of Lisbon, like the beautiful weather and delicious food, have made my experience here truly unforgettable. 🇵🇹

Adjusting to a new culture brought its own set of challenges and lessons. The biggest culture shock for me was the difference in punctuality. In the Netherlands, punctuality is highly valued, but in Portugal, things are a lot more relaxed. This experience taught me the importance of taking time for relationships and embracing a more laid-back approach to life.

Words of wisdom

For those who are hesitant about working abroad, my advice is simple: go for it! You will never regret taking the chance to explore and grow. Even if you decide to return home later, you’ll always cherish the experiences and memories you make along the way.

“You won’t regret going (you can always go back anyway) but you might regret not going at all.”

Homesickness is a natural part of living abroad, but I found effective ways to stay connected with my friends and family. Regular calls, voice messages, photos, and videos helped to close the distance and kept me close to my loved ones. My advice to anyone moving abroad is to make time for these connections—they can make a big difference in how you experience your new life!

One of the most valuable lessons I've learned from living abroad is independence. Until this experience, I lived at home with my parents. Moving to a new country required me to become self-reliant and responsible. This growth has been incredibly rewarding, and I've gained a sense of autonomy and self-confidence that I wouldn't have developed otherwise.
