Do you need some inspiration on what to do in Bulgaria? We have prepared five fantastic destinations around Sofia for you. You will find in this blog post a mix of city trips and wonderful nature, there is something for everyone.

Plovdiv

Close to Sofia you will find the city of Plovdiv. The second largest city in Bulgaria was built on seven hills and offers a lot to discover. The city is famous for its well-preserved Roman theater and basilica. The ancient architecture can also be seen here. Especially the small, pretty alleys in the city center are a good place for a walk or a visit to one of the many cafes and restaurants. 

Veliko Tarnovo

Just under 200 kilometers from Sofia is the former capital, Veliko Tarnovo. A visit here should not be missed. Not only because of its location on the river that runs through the whole valley, but there are also interesting sights to discover here, which can make your days in Veliko Tarnovo quite exciting. You should definitely visit Tsarevets Fortress, which is spread over three hills and was one of the most important castles of the Bulgarian Empire. Especially interesting here is the exploration of Samovodska Charshia, a small artisan street characterized by cobblestones and offering many small stores, but also some modern houses. 

7 Rila lakes 

Located in the northwestern part of Bulgaria, the Rila Lakes are definitely worth a side trip. They are among the most visited lakes in Bulgaria and are located at an altitude of 2100 to 2500 meters. You can choose different hiking routes there with different levels of difficulty, so also super suitable for the not so sporty among you. There is a route for everyone. 

Rila Monastery 

Rila Monastery is located between two rivers and is surrounded by incredible nature. You can reach it from Sofia in about one hour and 45 minutes. Moreover, it has become one of the most important sights in Bulgaria. It is the largest monastery in Bulgaria and even one of the largest Orthodox monasteries in the world. It is located at an altitude of 1140 meters in the Rila Valley, enclosed by the northwestern Rila Mountains and the Brichebor Mountains. Inside the monastery there is also a museum that displays a collection of historical relics. 

Krushuna Waterfalls

You are in the mood for more nature? Then you should definitely visit the Krushuna Waterfalls! The falls are located about 34 km from the city of Lovech and about two hours drive from Sofia and are known for their incredible scenery. You will even find a hiking trail that leads to the cave where the river originates. The main waterfall is about 20 meters high.
