Evie's adventure in Lisbon: working abroad is the best thing ever!

The start of my adventure in Lisbon!

From a young age, I've always had a passion for traveling. At the age of 17, I spent a year on exchange in America, and after completing my Travel & Hospitality education, I worked as a campsite employee in France. After returning to the Netherlands for a few months, I was eager to embark on another international adventure. Through Yobbers, I found my current job in Lisbon!

Fortunately, the application process was smooth. After applying, I received a phone call to discuss the job vacancies. Following that conversation, I made the definitive decision to go to Portugal! After successfully completing a few tests, it became clear which project I would be working on in Lisbon. After the final phone interview, I was congratulated and officially hired for my job in Lisbon!

Then the moment came to book my flight and pack my bags. And there I went again, off to another foreign country! Upon arriving at the airport in Portugal, I was promptly greeted by a company representative who took me to my apartment - my new "home" for the upcoming period!

My Customer Service job in Lisbon

I work in customer service in Lisbon, currently doing it from my apartment. It's exciting to think that I help people day in and day out by answering their questions and solving their problems. The company I work for always has different projects running, which means you can always choose to learn something new and switch projects! My colleagues are also incredibly hospitable, friendly, and extremely helpful.

My housemates also work for the same company as me, but on different projects. This creates a lot of diversity in the house, as we all come from different countries and work on different projects. This allows us to learn so much from each other!

Living in beautiful Lisbon

I absolutely love my life abroad. It truly is the best thing ever! Instead of staying in your familiar bubble in the Netherlands, it's amazing to explore a new country, a new culture, and meet new people. And let's not even get started on the delicious food in Portugal! Living in Lisbon is really wonderful: the people are friendly, it's easy to get around with public transportation, and the surroundings are incredibly beautiful!

The highlights of working abroad

It may sound cliché, but for me, the highlight is always the moment when you arrive in a new country and meet new people. In Lisbon, the hospitality and friendliness of the Portuguese population are amazing! So, you get to meet a lot of new people during your adventure abroad. People from Portugal itself, but also from Germany, Spain, Italy, England... you name it! From my experience, many of these people remain friends even after your adventure ends. Eventually, you have holiday destinations everywhere! (;

Step out of your comfort zone!

Living and working abroad allows you to grow in so many ways. You're completely on your own and (unconsciously) learn so many new things. Suddenly, you have to do everything, and I know it may sound scary, but it really isn't. It's actually a huge challenge, and challenges are fun, right? Plus, asking questions is also a way to grow! If something doesn't work or you're unsure, there are plenty of people ready to help you immediately!

Living and working abroad: why wouldn't you do it?! It's such a cool and amazing experience. Why miss out on that opportunity? If you don't like it, you can always go back home. But I can assure you, once you're in Lisbon, you won't even want to go back home! During your breaks, you can enjoy the sunshine, giving you a vacation feeling even while working. And of course, you're earning money at the same time. Who wouldn't want that?

So far, I haven't encountered any issues. Everything has gone smoothly, and Yobbers is there to assist you with any questions and uncertainties. Your future company is also always there for you! The only thing I want to leave you with is: don't be afraid, step out of your comfort zone, and go for it! There's so much beauty to discover…
