Places to visit in December!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Fireplaces, Christmas markets, hot chocolate and watching movies under a blanket on the couch. December is the month to stay in and get cosy. Although, for all you travellers out there this might doesn’t sound exciting enough! Especially for you, we made a list of the best places to visit in December.

Germany, Düsseldorf

We understand you wouldn’t want to miss the best part of December: Christmas markets! When you travel to Düsseldorf, Germany you won’t be disappointed. With 6 different Christmas markets spread over the city, Düsseldorf offers you a real Winter Wonderland experience. Each market has its own historic style, no wonder why the Christmas market in Düsseldorf is one of the most popular ones in Germany! For the best panoramic views of the city you can also visit the Rhine Tower. After strolling around the markets and buying all your Christmas presents, you will find all the best restaurants in the Derendorf and Pempelfort neighborhoods.

India, Kerala

Located in the South of India, you find tropical beaches, magical backwaters and spice- and tea covered hills. With temperatures between 23 and 31 degrees, Kerala is the perfect destination in December. Kerala is mostly known for its backwaters: an extraordinary network of lagoons and canals. The best way to explore the area? Rent a houseboat for the night! Meals are often included, so you will get your own private crew on board while you’re enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the backwaters. When you’ve seen enough water, it’s time to head to the tea plantations of Munnar. This will feel like a completely different world compared to the rest of India! 

France, Val Thorens 

With an altitude between 2.200 and 3.200 meters, you are snow-guaranteed in this ski resort in the French Alps! Did you know that Val Thorens is the largest ski area in the world? It has over 600 kilometers of runs, which makes it ideal for skiers and snowboarders of all different levels. The “3 Valley lift pass” allows you to ski through Val Thorens, Meribel and Courchevel. Worth mentioning is that Val Thorens has a vibrant après-ski scene. After a day of being on the slopes, you can enjoy good music, drinks and food at La Folie Douce. Want to make your skiing trip in France a bit more diverse? Go zip-lining, take a husky ride or treat yourself to a wellness day!

United States, New York

These streets will make you feel brand new, big lights will inspire you 🎶✨ If New York isn’t already magical enough during the rest of the year, it certainly will be in December. The famous Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Plaza will be the perfect spot for a nice photo and with tons of Christmas markets and events going on, you will have plenty to do. You like it more active? Go ice skating in Central Park and, with a bit of luck, you can do it in the snow! ❄️ Talking about snow: it can be super cold in December, so don’t forget to pack all your scarfs, hoodies and gloves. An absolute must in December in NYC is to visit one of the many Christmas shows, like The Rockettes or The Nutcracker. 

Costa Rica, Monteverde

Do you want to escape the gray skies & cold weather and go somewhere green & sunny? You won’t regret traveling to Costa Rica in December! The rainy season has just come to an end and the whole country is flourishing green. The cloud forest of Monteverde is known for its flora and fauna (such as sloths and toucans) and is the place to be for real adventurers! You’ll find the longest zipline in Latin America here: with a length of 1590 meters you will fly above the Costan Rican cloud forest! Looking for some more adrenaline? A tram on cables will carry you over the valley to Bungee Jump off a 143 meters high platform. For the best pictures you should definitely go to the Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges, located in the surroundings of Monteverde. 

Africa, Tanzania

With temperatures around 28 degrees, and once in a while a few drops of rain (which you will appreciate), Tanzania should definitely be included in the list of places to travel to in December! With its diversity, Tanzania has something to offer for every traveler. For those who want a challenge, Mount Kilimanjaro is waiting to be climbed! Was your year already active enough? Then enjoy a nice safari in one of the national parks. The nature in the Serengeti National Park is at its best in December! End your trip at Zanzibar, relax at the beach and spot some monkeys and sea turtles. 🐢
