Bulgaria hotspots

Bulgaria is a country with a history spanning thousands of years. As such, it is home to numerous magical places that attract around 9 million tourists each year. Are you planning to visit Bulgaria soon? We have compiled a list for you of 10 Instagram-worthy locations!

Secret hotspots

If you paid attention in geography class, you know that the entire East Coast of Bulgaria borders the Black Sea. Some locations along the coast are very popular among tourists. Opt for a quieter spot like Cape Emine: a perfect location for landscape photography or vacation pictures without crowds. Take the opportunity to explore the abandoned ruins, including the monastery and the lighthouse.

Touristy hotspots

Prefer swimming, long sandy beaches, and restaurants? Definitely visit one of the various seaside resorts along the coast. 🏖 One of the most famous and popular is the resort 'Zlatni Pjasatsi' near Varna. Note! There is also a nature park with the same name, where you can discover rare plant species instead of clubs.

Nessebar

Nessebar, also known as the 'Pearl of the Black Sea,' is a coastal town that is around 3000 years old and has undergone many changes throughout history. It is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical buildings. The city is divided into two parts. The more modern part with tourist facilities is on the mainland. In contrast, the old part is on a peninsula off the coast and is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip. In the old part of the city, you can see influences from various cultures due to its former occupations. A unique destination you don't want to miss!

Winter sports

Planning to visit Bulgaria in winter? You can go skiing, snowboarding, or ride a snowmobile. In the large ski resorts of Bansko or Pamporovo, there are slopes for all ages. Also, be sure to visit the Vitosha Mountain (near Sofia) for skiing or snowboarding, followed by a delightful mulled wine tasting. 🍷

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia

How can we talk about tourism in Bulgaria without mentioning the capital Sofia and the majestic St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral? It was built in honor of the Russian soldiers who fell in the war between Russia and Turkey from 1877 to 1878. In the crypt, you'll find the Museum of Holy Art, which is part of the National Art Gallery!

The National Historical Museum

We're staying in the capital to explore Bulgaria's largest museum! The National Historical Museum outlines the country's history from prehistory and the earliest peoples to modern times. Over 650,000 items depict the fascinating history of the country, including the various cultures that followed, such as the Romans and the Ottomans. If you are a true history enthusiast or just curious, this museum is a must-visit.

Rila Monastery

In the south of Sofia stands Bulgaria's must-see. Founded in the tenth century by the hermit Saint Ivan of Rila, the monastery is a pilgrimage site and one of the most important monuments in Bulgaria for culture, architecture, and tourism. The monastery attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year! What can you see? Unique architecture, impressive paintings with vibrant colors and intricate details on both the walls and the ceiling. Don't forget the museum, where you can find the famous Rafael Cross. A crucifix that this monk worked on for 12 years before losing his eyesight. In other words, a unique location filled with history and emotion.

Yalta Club

Up for a night out in the Bulgarian capital? Then Yalta Club is the place for you! It's one of the city's premier clubs and even has a place in the city's history. It was the first club where electronic music was played after the Communist era. Today, it attracts DJs from around the world and plays mainly pop, electro, and dance music. According to DJ Mag, it is the 12th best club in the world, so it's definitely worth going and enjoying the atmosphere!

The Buzludzha Memorial House

The Buzludzha monument is the former headquarters of the Bulgarian Communist Party. The communists wanted the building (inaugurated in 1981) to reflect the grandeur of their ideology. Hence, it is seventy meters high, with a diameter of several tens of meters, and has the shape of a flying saucer. It is built on the top of a mountain that the communists blew up to make it workable. Currently, the building is the 25th most beautiful abandoned monument in the world, but its state is deteriorating rapidly. So, don't wait too long to visit and capture it with your camera!

Plovdiv

Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria, packed with magical places to discover! One of the most unique locations is the Alyosha monument. It honors the fallen soldiers and is situated on top of a mountain. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the entire city, the river, and the mountains on the horizon. Signs from the past have also been left behind, such as an archaeological site and the old town, where the architecture has been preserved. Additionally, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes at reasonable prices for true food enthusiasts. Our tip: plan a road trip to Plovdiv!
